IF ~ BREAD

Bluedreamer's Choice No 34

"If" is a song written by American singer-songwriter David Gates in 1971. Originally popularized by his group Bread, the song charted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 when released as a single in 1971. The song also spent three weeks at number one on the Easy Listening chart . It was quickly covered by other singers (including Petula Clark, Cleo Laine, Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Perry Como , Telly Savalas, Shirley Bassey, Westlife and Frankmusik). It was also covered by Damien Leith on his album Catch the Wind: Songs of a Generation, which was released in 2008. The Telly Savalas version reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in March 1975, and has the shortest title of any song to reach number one. "If" has been a perennial favorite at weddings (for example, as a first-dance song) ever since it was released. It was also recorded, as an album track, by Scott Walker in his early 1970s MOR period. This song is often of interest to guitarists because of the unique tremolo/wah-wah effect on the electric guitar in the intro. One San Diego, California radio station in the early 1970s reported that the effect took months to produce. However, Bread used that effect live when playing the song in their concerts.

COPACABANA ~ BARRY MANILOW

"Copacabana" is a 1978 song, sung by Barry Manilow and written by Jack Feldman, Barry Manilow, and Bruce Sussman. It is also known as "Copacabana (At the Copa)". It debuted on Billboard magazine's Top 40 chart on July 7, 1978, and peaked at #8. It peaked at #42 in the UK the same year. A remixed version of the song peaked at #22 in 1993. The record earned for Manilow his first (and only, to date) Grammy Award in February 1979 and his first gold single for a song he composed. The song's title refers to the famous New York City night club, the Copacabana, and tells the story of Lola, a showgirl, and her lover Tony, a bartender at the club. Shirley Bassey also covered the song in 1979, on the double A-side single "This Is My Life". This song is played as a cassette tape by the penguins in the movie Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

SHIRLEY BASSEY

Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey is a British singer. She performed the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979). She is the only singer to have recorded more than one James Bond theme song. Bassey is an international artist who has accumulated 20 silver discs for sales in Britain, Europe and the Middle East; fifty-plus gold discs for international record sales; and countless greatest hits compilation albums including one gold and two platinum.

In recognition of her career longevity, and admiration from the Royal Family, Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) on 31 December 1999 by HM Queen Elizabeth II. She was invited to perform in 2002 at the Party at the Palace, a public celebration of The Queen's Golden Jubilee. She was also awarded France's top honour, the Legion d'Honneur, to signify her popularity and importance in the culture of France. She now resides in Monaco and has recently sold her London apartment - many of its furnishings were auctioned for charity.
